Don’t You Know That You’re Toxic?
Enjoy my new favorite version of “Toxic” by Britney Spears. I have now become a huge fan of two different versions of popular songs that feature beautiful instruments within one week. From Duomo’s version of “Wildest Dreams” by Taylor Swift to this - I am loving all of it. The darkness involved with this instrumental, slowed down, string quartet, version of “Toxic” is absolutely perfect in the new movie Promising Young Woman.
Emerald Fennell, the director of Promising Young Woman, wanted to include “Toxic” in the film but she wanted to make it more dark. The quick story behind it is that Fennell was working with Anthony Willis on many different instrumental versions to fit the film, but nothing was working. They stumbled upon a string quartet playing of “Toxic” on YouTube, and then decided to slow it down, and then asked the Viennese string quartet to play it like they were drunk. I suggest you watch the movie first before really diving in here. Once you see the scene associated with this song, you will understand why it is so perfect… and bad ass.

Promising Young Woman
I HAVE to talk about this movie. I watched it yesterday by renting it off of Amazon Prime. It’s just short of two hours long, but wow did it capture my attention immediately. The first scene is intensely cringeworthy for anyone to watch because of how real the scenario is.
This is the reality of what women go through every time we decide to go out for drinks. This movie is uncomfortable to watch, but also so necessary to watch to try and get a glimpse of what women go through. The sick part is I guarantee that many women can tell you they believe that either they have been drugged before, or they know someone who has been. So yes, this movie hits home to many.
The main character, Cassie, makes it her mission to teach men that claim to be “good guys” that their actions are wrong, and disgusting. She also proves many points to anyone, male or female, that was involved in covering up a terrible incident her best friend was involved in. All around, this movie needs to be watched no matter who you are. You can start by watching the official trailer that was released about a year ago to get a better idea of what I mean.
Friday Night Recap
I’m sitting here at my desk in my living room reflecting on what a great weekend I had, but Friday specifically was great. Obviously we are in the middle of a pandemic, so the term “going out” isn’t really “going out” like we may know it. My friend and I spent some time researching places that have tents outside that were protective of the Chicago cold, so we made some reservations and hit the town.
First, my friend took me to Soho House for the first time ever, and it was an amazing experience. We ordered some appetizers and the infamous ‘Picante Margarita’(s). They were delicious to say the least. Soho House did a great job socially distancing the tables with plexiglass in between each of them. After our first stop, we then walked 40 feet to Bandit - where they had a huge outdoor tent with socially distanced tables as well. These were both great options for Chicago. They didn’t leave us freezing outside due to the Illinois Tier 3 Mitigations, but also kept us on ‘the safer side’. I definitely recommend either of these locations for a comforting sense of “normal” while also being literally physically comfortable.

Woke up not feeling my best. Started off the night with amazing margs from Soho House, then had a phenomenal Tito’s based drink at Bandit along with some bombs… oops. Obviously had to end the night with good ole’ White Claws. I’m now realizing and understanding how bad my hangover was as I write this.
Tequila —> Vodka —> Shots —> Claws.
